Shortly after dawn in the Campo San Vidal, masons chisel blocks of Istrian stone in a square that has been turned into a temporary workshop while the church of San Vidal, behind the viewer, is being rebuilt. A cockerel crows on a windowsill, a woman draws water from the well, a child has toppled over and his mother rushes to him under the eye of a neighbour airing bedding from a window, and across the Grand Canal stand the church and campanile of Santa Maria della Carità. Canaletto painted it around 1725, early in his career, probably for a Venetian rather than a visiting buyer, and it is unlike the polished views of St Mark's he later sold to English tourists: the plaster is crumbling, laundry hangs everywhere, and the light is real morning light. It is among the earliest paintings to use Prussian blue. The National Gallery in London has long counted it among his finest works.
