The first of Cole's five-part Course of Empire, the cycle commissioned in 1833 by the New York merchant Luman Reed for the picture gallery of his house on Greenwich Street. Dawn breaks over an untouched wilderness at the mouth of a river valley: a storm moves across the mountains, a hunter in skins has just shot a stag, canoes cross the water and a ring of figures dances around a fire on a plateau. A boulder balanced on a crag above the bay appears in every painting of the series and lets the viewer recognise the same place through the ages. Cole completed this canvas in 1834, developing it from A Wild Scene, a picture he had painted for Robert Gilmor to win the commission. The cycle traces an imaginary classical state from wilderness to ruin; it was given to the New-York Historical Society in 1858.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
