The second canvas of The Voyage of Life. The voyager, now a young man, has taken the tiller himself and stands in the boat pointing towards a shining castle in the sky, while his guardian angel stays behind on the bank and the river curves away through a green summer landscape. The castle is a daydream of glory and fame, and the river that seems to lead to it will shortly bend out of sight towards the rapids of Manhood. Cole painted this version in Rome in 1841 and 1842, a second set of the series he had first completed in 1840, and exhibited it in Rome and then in Boston and other American cities. With its three companions it belonged to George Shoenberger of Cincinnati and came to the National Gallery of Art in Washington in 1971.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
