Children fish from the bank of the River Stour beside a water-powered paper mill at Stratford St Mary, two miles west of Constable's birthplace at East Bergholt. The mill sits in shadow at the left while sunlight plays between the trees, a dying willow leans over glassy water, a barge is moored to the far bank and a sunlit farmhouse shows in the distance. This was the second of the six-foot Stour canvases Constable sent to the Royal Academy between 1819 and 1825, a series that includes The Hay Wain. Exhibited in 1820, it was bought by his friend John Fisher, who gave it to his solicitor John Pern Tinney. After Constable's death it became known as The Young Waltonians, after Izaak Walton's The Compleat Angler. It is now in the National Gallery, London.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
