Salisbury Cathedral rises beyond the River Nadder under a storm that is passing: a rainbow arches over the spire while a wagon and three horses ford the river, a dog watches, and cattle stand in the meadow. Constable painted it in 1831, three years after the death of his wife Maria, and exhibited it at the Royal Academy that year, continuing to rework it through 1833 and 1834. He later attached lines from James Thomson's The Seasons that make the rainbow a sign of hope after a storm. Constable considered that the painting embodied the full compass of his art, and it is widely regarded as the climax of his career. Tate acquired it in 2013 for 23.1 million pounds with partner galleries, after which it toured Britain for five years before returning to Tate Britain for permanent display.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
