The angel Gabriel kneels on a flowered lawn holding a lily, and the Virgin, seated at a carved marble lectern beside a palazzo corner, lifts her left hand in response; between them a screen of dark cypresses and pines opens onto a hazy harbour and blue mountains. Leonardo painted the long panel in Florence in about 1472–1476, while still in the workshop of Andrea del Verrocchio, and it is his earliest surviving major work. The lectern appears to derive from the Medici tomb Verrocchio was carving in San Lorenzo in the same years, and Gabriel's wings, first painted like a bird's, were later lengthened by another hand. Little is known of the commission. The picture came to the Uffizi in 1867 from the Olivetan monastery of San Bartolomeo near Florence, catalogued as a Ghirlandaio; in 1869 the scholar Karl Eduard von Liphart identified it as a youthful Leonardo, and a drawing for the angel's sleeve in Oxford later supported him. It hangs in the Uffizi.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
