The Virgin sits on the lap of her mother, Saint Anne, and leans forward to draw back the Christ Child, who has seized a lamb, a sign of his coming Passion; behind them blue mountains fade into mist. Leonardo had worked on the theme for years, including the large drawing known as the Burlington House Cartoon in the National Gallery, London. The panel is often linked to a commission from Louis XII of France after the birth of his daughter in 1499, but it was never delivered, and Leonardo was still working on it, unfinished, when he died in France in 1519. In 2008 a Louvre curator found faint sketches on the back, including a horse's head and half a skull, judged very probably by Leonardo. A cleaning completed in 2012 brightened the colours and led two members of the advisory committee to resign in protest. It hangs in the Louvre.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.

Size. We'd hang this one at 24×36. Prints at 12×18, 16×24, 24×36 in — 12×18 for a shelf, desk or a gallery-wall grid; 16×24 above a desk, console or in a hallway; 24×36 as the statement piece above a sofa or bed.
Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — black suits the deep tones of this period; natural wood lightens it.
Pairing. Pairs as a set of three with other famous painting prints (10% off three or more).
