A half-length portrait of a woman seated before a hazy landscape of winding paths, water and distant mountains, her hands folded and her expression hovering between a smile and repose. Leonardo probably began it in Florence around 1503; the sitter is generally identified as Lisa Gherardini, wife of the silk merchant Francesco del Giocondo. He is thought to have kept working on it for years and took it with him to France, where it passed into the royal collection and then to the Louvre. The soft transitions between tones, with no hard outlines, are the technique known as sfumato, built up from many thin glazes of oil on a poplar panel. Its theft in 1911 and recovery two years later made it the most famous painting in the world.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
A smoky portrait with soft, muted tones that reads best at close range and eye level: a study, landing or reading corner at 16×24. Black frame on a warm neutral wall; it is lost above a sofa at a distance.

Size. We'd hang this one at 16×24. Prints at 12×18, 16×24, 24×36 in — 12×18 for a shelf, desk or a gallery-wall grid; 16×24 above a desk, console or in a hallway; 24×36 as the statement piece above a sofa or bed.
Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — black suits the deep tones of this period; natural wood lightens it.
Pairing. Pairs as a set of three with other famous painting prints (10% off three or more).
