On a sunny afternoon a maid leads a small girl down the steps of a brick courtyard, a dish in her hand, while through the arched passage on the left the lady of the house stands looking out toward the street. A broom and bucket rest against the wall, a vine tumbles over a trellis, and above the archway a stone tablet from the former Hieronymusdale convent in Delft counsels patience and humility; the tablet itself survives in the Prinsenhof museum. De Hooch signed and dated the canvas 1658, one of six he dated that year, at the height of his Delft period when he painted the quiet geometry of courtyards and passages with more care than anyone before him. The picture balances a tightly drawn architectural half against a looser, leafier one. It is NG835 at the National Gallery in London, and its calm has made it one of the best-loved Dutch pictures there.
