On a sunny afternoon a maid leads a small girl down the steps of a brick courtyard, a dish in her hand, while through the arched passage on the left the lady of the house stands looking out toward the street. A broom and bucket rest against the wall, a vine tumbles over a trellis, and above the archway a stone tablet from the former Hieronymusdale convent in Delft counsels patience and humility; the tablet itself survives in the Prinsenhof museum. De Hooch signed and dated the canvas 1658, one of six he dated that year, at the height of his Delft period when he painted the quiet geometry of courtyards and passages with more care than anyone before him. The picture balances a tightly drawn architectural half against a looser, leafier one. It is NG835 at the National Gallery in London, and its calm has made it one of the best-loved Dutch pictures there.

This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.

Is this the whole painting, or a crop?
The whole work, uncropped. The image fills the print at the painting's own proportions; nothing is trimmed to fit a frame.
Is The Courtyard of a House in Delft in the public domain?
Yes. Pieter de Hooch (1629–1684) died more than 70 years ago and the work was published before 1929, so the painting itself is public domain. This print is a reproduction made from a high-resolution scan of the original, which is held by National Gallery.
What is it printed on?
Heavyweight matte fine-art paper with pigment inks, made to order in 12×18, 16×24 and 24×36 inches; the two larger sizes are also offered framed. Colours are matched to the scan, not brightened.
When was The Courtyard of a House in Delft painted, and in what medium?
The Courtyard of a House in Delft dates from 1658 and was made in oil on canvas; the original measures 74 × 60 cm.
What size works above a sofa or bed?
For a standard three-seat sofa or a queen bed, 24×36 inches reads as a single statement piece; 16×24 suits a narrower wall or a pairing. The print's proportions follow the original, so a landscape-format painting is wider than it is tall.
