In a tiled cellar room a young woman in a red jacket and blue skirt hands a lidded jug to a small child who looks up to see what is inside. The child wears a dress with leading strings, the walking reins all Dutch toddlers wore, which is why the figure long described as a girl is now thought to be a boy. On the left a door opens to the pantry with its cask and small window; on the right another doorway leads to a front room where daylight pours through an open window onto a cushioned chair and a portrait on the wall. De Hooch painted it around 1656 to 1660, and these views from one space into the next, each with its own light, were his signature. It can be traced through Amsterdam sales back to 1712 and has been in the Rijksmuseum since the nineteenth century.
