A European goldfinch sits on the top rung of its feeding box, a thin chain running from its leg to the perch, against a sunlit whitewashed wall. Goldfinches were kept as pets because they could be taught to draw water in a thimble-sized bucket, which gave the bird its Dutch name, puttertje. Carel Fabritius, a pupil of Rembrandt, signed and dated the panel 1654, and that October he was killed at thirty-two when the Delft gunpowder store exploded; only about a dozen of his paintings survive. The wing is painted in thick yellow strokes scratched through with the brush handle to show the black beneath, a trick learned in Rembrandt's studio, and the thick panel was sawn from a larger piece, which suggests it was once part of a cage or a cover. Lost for two centuries and rediscovered in Brussels, it has been in the Mauritshuis in The Hague since 1896.
