Sarah Bernhardt as Joan of Arc stands in armour and a flowered surcoat with a sword and a banner, flames and smoke rising behind her, under the lettering Jeanne d'Arc above and Sarah Bernhardt below. Grasset designed the poster in 1890 for Bernhardt's production of Jules Barbier's play at the Théâtre de la Porte-Saint-Martin, five years before Mucha's Gismonda, and it is the first great theatre poster of the Art Nouveau. The medieval lettering and the flat flames are printed by G. de Malherbe, Paris. The impression reproduced is in the Bibliothèque nationale de France.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
An armoured figure in flame colours with medieval lettering, for a study, library or stairwell at 16×24 or 24×36 in thin black or dark wood, no mat. It suits a white or deep red wall and pairs with Mucha's Gismonda.
