An empty corner of a room: a tall sash window with its panes filled with pale light, a panelled door, a stretch of bare floorboards and the slanting patch of sun that gives the painting its title. There are no people and almost no colour beyond greys, whites and a soft brown. Hammershøi painted it in 1906 in the flat at Strandgade 30 in Copenhagen where he and his wife Ida lived for ten years and which he painted again and again, often with the furniture removed. The brushwork is dry and matte, and the geometry of window bars and door panels is as carefully balanced as a still life. The painting is in the Tate collection in London, one of the few Hammershøis in a British museum, and his quiet interiors have found a wide new audience since the 1990s.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
