We look from inside an upper room of a teahouse across green tatami mats and a wooden balcony to the bay, where boats lie under a full moon and a line of geese. Plates, cups and a fan left from a meal lie on the floor, a lantern stands near the rail, and the shadow of a figure falls on the paper screen at the left. The print is number eighty-two in One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, published by Uoya Eikichi, with a censor's seal of the eighth month of 1857. Tsuki no Misaki, the moon-viewing point, was a hill above Shinagawa on the bay, famous for its views of the autumn moon. Hiroshige tells the story of an evening through what is left behind rather than through the people; impressions vary in colour and condition.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
