A broad blue pond fills the centre of the sheet, its banks dotted with pines and a weeping willow, and teahouses with white awnings stand above the water at the lower right. The roofs of the shrine appear among the trees at the lower left, and beyond the far bank a line of tall pines stands against a red glow, with dark mountains rising out of the mist. The print is number fifty in One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, published by Uoya Eikichi, with a censor's seal of the seventh month of 1856. The Kumano shrine at Tsunohazu, popularly called Jūnisō, was a cool summer retreat on the western edge of Edo, known for its pond and waterfall. Hiroshige shows it from a high viewpoint, with soft graded mist between near and far; impressions vary in colour and condition.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
