A large cargo boat with a thatched cover lies moored among the reeds, and a boatman leans over the side to empty a pot into the water, startling two white herons into flight. Beyond the reeds and a few roofs, a white Fuji rises on the far horizon. The print belongs to Hokusai's Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, published around 1830–1832 by Nishimuraya Yohachi (Eijudō). Ushibori was a river port on the waterways of Hitachi province, north-east of Edo, so far from Fuji that the mountain is only a distant shape. The cool blues and the long diagonal of the hull give the scene a quiet, early-morning feeling; impressions vary in colour and condition.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
