Two cypresses tower almost to the top of the canvas, their dark green flames writhing against a sky of swirling blue and a hillside dotted with white and ochre flowers. Van Gogh painted it in late June 1889, soon after entering the asylum at Saint-Rémy, when the cypress had seized his attention: beautiful in line and proportion, he thought, like an Egyptian obelisk, and the most difficult dark note in a sun-drenched landscape to get exactly right. It is one of two close-up vertical views of the trees he made that summer; the other is in the Kröller-Müller Museum in Otterlo. The paint is thick and ridged, every stroke following the twist of the foliage. Van Gogh sent it to the Salon des Indépendants in Paris in 1890. The Metropolitan Museum of Art bought it in 1949 with the Rogers Fund.
