A late Venetian view, painted in 1843: the domed church of Santa Maria della Salute and the customs house at the Punta della Dogana rise out of a haze of light, with boats and figures dissolving into reflections on the water. Turner exhibited it at the Royal Academy in 1843, where it was bought straight from the walls by the Birmingham collector Edwin Bullock. It is one of the smaller Venetian canvases from the artist's last years, when the city had become a vehicle for pure colour and atmosphere rather than topography. The painting passed through several English collections, including that of Sir John Fowler, before crossing the Atlantic, and was given to the National Gallery of Art in Washington in 1961 by the Fuller Foundation in memory of Governor Alvan T. Fuller of Massachusetts.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
