A line of samurai retainers in yellow hats marches toward us along a road beside the moat, led by a man in a green coat with a tall spear topped by a white tuft. To the left, the still blue water of the Tameike pond stretches below a stone wall and green banks under a pink sky. The print is number eighty-five in One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, published by Uoya Eikichi, with a censor's seal of the ninth month of 1857. Kinokuni Hill at Akasaka ran past a residence of the lords of Kii province, which gave the slope its name. The marching figures are drawn large and close, filling the right side of the sheet; impressions vary in colour and condition.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
