Pale washes of pink, rose, coral and sand lay out the roofs and gardens of a small North African town, with rows of green dots for trees, and beyond them the mauve tower of the mosque and a second tower against a white sky. Klee made this watercolour in 1914 on his journey to Tunisia with August Macke and Louis Moilliet, and inscribed it in pencil below with its year, number and title. He later treated the trip as the moment he became a painter rather than a draughtsman. The broken, square-built planes of light here are the beginning of the colour-grid pictures he would develop over the next decade, and they show him reducing a real view to blocks of colour while keeping its warmth and air. The sheet came to The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York in 1984 as part of the Berggruen Klee Collection.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
