A green hill crowned with cherry trees in pink bloom has been cut away into a bare grey cliff, and a stream winds through a hollow below where small figures walk among patches of grass. Tall pines stand on the summit against a clear sky with a red horizon. The print is number twenty-eight in One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, published by Uoya Eikichi, with a censor's seal of the fourth month of 1856. Gotenyama at Shinagawa was a famous cherry-viewing hill, and the exposed earth records digging done there in the 1850s for the coastal defences in the bay. Hiroshige contrasts the soft blossoms with the raw cut of the hillside; impressions vary in colour and condition.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
Fresh green, blossom pink and grey stone under a clear blue sky, for a living room, study or hallway at 16×24 in natural wood. It pairs with Hokusai's Fuji from Gotenyama on the Tōkaidō at Shinagawa, a view of the same hill before the digging.
