The roof and hull of a pleasure boat fill the foreground, close enough to touch, with the patterned kimono of a passenger just visible behind the post at left. Beyond it, across the Sumida River, stretch the Azuma Bridge and the pagoda of Kinryūzan temple at Asakusa, with a small white Fuji on the horizon and cherry petals drifting down through the air. The print is number thirty-nine in One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, published by Uoya Eikichi, with a censor's seal of the eighth month of 1857. Kinryūzan is the temple better known as Sensōji, one of the great places of pilgrimage in Edo. Hiroshige's boat cropped by the edges of the sheet is one of his boldest foregrounds; impressions vary in colour and condition.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
