Vertical strips at the left and right edges frame a central field of soft rectangles in violet, rose, blue and teal, with a band of dotted green across the middle and a curve of red at the bottom; the shapes suggest walls, gardens and sky seen in strong light. Klee painted this small sheet in April 1914 on his journey to Tunisia with August Macke and Louis Moilliet, when the three visited Tunis, Hammamet and Kairouan. The trip was a turning point: in Kairouan he wrote in his diary that colour had taken possession of him, and he declared himself a painter. The square-built sheets he made there opened the way to the colour-grid pictures of the following decade. This one is in the Kunstmuseum Basel.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
