Rain falls in fine lines from a deep blue sky, where a single cuckoo flies at the top of the sheet, and a red banner hangs from a tall pole in the right foreground. Below, the roof of Komakata Hall sits in the lower left corner, and across the grey-blue river the long Azuma Bridge and green bank fade into the wet air. The print is number sixty-two in One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, published by Uoya Eikichi, with a censor's seal of the first month of 1857. The cuckoo is a traditional emblem of early summer in Japanese poetry. Hiroshige keeps the design spare, with the bird, the banner and the bridge spaced across an open sky; impressions vary in colour and condition.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
