At a teahouse under a yellow thatched roof, travellers sit on benches eating while a woman in blue brings a tray of cups, and a paper lantern and a lettered sign hang at the door. In the road a man in green leads a horse with a red saddle cloth, another horse waits under a tree, and big trees and plum blossom stand against a blue sky. This is print fifty-nine of The Sixty-nine Stations of the Kisokaidō, published by Hōeidō and later Kinjudō, c. 1835–38. Keisai Eisen began the series and Utagawa Hiroshige, who designed this sheet, completed it. Sekigahara was the fifty-eighth station on the Nakasendō, the inland road from Edo to Kyoto; the English title is descriptive, and impressions vary in colour and condition.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
