A locomotive from Normandy pulls in beneath the iron and glass shed of the Gare Saint-Lazare, its steam and smoke billowing up to the roof while passengers wait on the platform. Monet painted the station from inside in 1877, one of twelve canvases of the subject and one of eight he showed at the third Impressionist exhibition that April. The choice was pointed: industrial Paris, not a riverbank, was the modern subject, and Saint-Lazare was the terminal that linked the city to Normandy, where he had learned to paint outdoors, and to the suburban towns the Impressionists favoured. The canvas is signed and dated 1877 at the lower left. It was bought by Ernest Hoschedé the year it was made and reached the Art Institute of Chicago through the bequest of the collector Martin A. Ryerson in 1932.
