The high wooden arch of the Mannen Bridge spans the whole width of the sheet, its deck lined with small figures, and through the gap beneath it a tiny Mount Fuji appears far away on the horizon. Boats glide on the river below, and a fisherman casts a line from the stone bank at the right. The print belongs to Hokusai's Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, published around 1830–1832 by Nishimuraya Yohachi (Eijudō), where it is usually counted fourth in the series. Fukagawa lay on the east bank of the Sumida, and the bridge crossed the Onagi canal near its mouth. The steep, almost geometric arch is drawn with a Western-style perspective that Hokusai liked to test against the mountain's simple cone; impressions vary in colour and condition.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
Pale river blue and a soft red-brown bridge framing a tiny Fuji, for a living room, home office or hallway at 16×24 in natural wood. It pairs with Hiroshige's Mannen Bridge in Fukagawa, a view of the same bridge a generation later.
