An olive orchard outside the asylum at Saint-Rémy, the gnarled trunks and silver-green canopies rendered in short, stippled strokes against a violet ground and a pale sky. This is one of five pictures of olive groves Van Gogh painted in November 1889, working outdoors on clear, cold days in bright sun. He made them partly in answer to the Christ in the Garden of Olives canvases that Gauguin and Émile Bernard had just painted from imagination, which he dismissed as abstractions. His own groves would be, he wrote, a rather harsh and coarse realism beside theirs, rustic and smelling of the soil. The dotted handling owes something to Seurat, but the rhythm of the trees is entirely his. The painting belongs to the Metropolitan Museum of Art through the gift of Walter and Leonore Annenberg.
