Picnickers sit on red mats on the green crest of Asukayama, among pines and cherry trees in pink bloom, while the land falls away to a wide pale plain and a river. On the horizon stands a dark, twin-peaked mountain. The print is number seventeen in One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, published by Uoya Eikichi, with a censor's seal of the fifth month of 1856. Asukayama, north of Edo, had been planted with cherry trees in the eighteenth century and became one of the city's favourite places for blossom viewing. Hiroshige leaves most of the middle distance as an open expanse, so the eye travels from the crowd to the far mountain; impressions vary in colour and condition.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
