Two steep, oddly shaped crags rise on either side of the snowy summit of Mount Fuji, which appears above a band of cloud, while below, travellers and packhorses make their way along a road beside the rushing Minobu River. Waves of white water break along the riverbed in the foreground. The print is one of the ten additional views Hokusai added to his Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, published around 1830–1832 by Nishimuraya Yohachi (Eijudō), and like the others it is printed with black outlines. The title describes the back of Fuji, seen from the Minobu River on the mountain's western side. The fantastic shapes of the crags give this one of the most dramatic designs in the set; impressions vary in colour and condition.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
