A path lined with blue-and-white pots runs between banks of towering sunflowers up to the steps of the house Monet rented at Vétheuil on the Seine. The small boy on the path is his son, and the figures on the steps are members of his extended household. Monet planted a garden wherever he lived and had arranged with the owner to landscape these terraces down to the river; the big flowerpots were his own, and he carried them with him to each new home. The high horizon and the steps that block the path keep the eye on the surface, where the paint is thick and layered and the shadows fall in blues, plums and greens. By the early 1880s Monet was as interested in the painted surface as in the fleeting effect of light. The canvas is in the National Gallery of Art in Washington.
