- Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji
Mount Fuji rises bare and brown above a quiet lake ringed with green hills and a small village, while in the still water below its reflection appears white with snow and set off to the side. A single boat floats on the lake. The print belongs to Hokusai's Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, published around 1830–1832 by Nishimuraya Yohachi (Eijudō). The view is from Misaka in Kai province, on the north side of the mountain. The mismatch between the summer mountain and the snowy, shifted reflection is a deliberate and much-discussed invention; impressions vary in colour and condition.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
