- Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji
A ferry boat crosses a broad river whose surface is drawn in rippling blue lines, while on the near bank a traveller leads a horse laden with goods. Above wide bands of mist, Mount Fuji rises white-capped over a dark ridge. The print belongs to Hokusai's Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, published around 1830–1832 by Nishimuraya Yohachi (Eijudō). The Tama River flows across Musashi province south-west of Edo and was a familiar crossing on the way out of the city. Much of the sheet is left as open, pale space, so the river and the mountain read as two calm bands of blue; impressions vary in colour and condition.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
