Heavily laden boats are rowed across calm water in the foreground, while the island of Tsukudajima sits in the middle distance with its houses and a forest of ships' masts. A small white Fuji rises above a long, low shore on the horizon. The print belongs to Hokusai's Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, published around 1830–1832 by Nishimuraya Yohachi (Eijudō). Tsukudajima was a fishing island at the mouth of the Sumida River in Edo Bay. The soft blues of the bay are graded toward the horizon, giving the scene a quiet morning light; impressions vary in colour and condition.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
Soft bay blue with red-brown boats and a small white Fuji, for a living room, bathroom or study at 16×24 in natural wood. It pairs with Hiroshige's Tsukudajima and Eitai Bridge, the same island by night.
