A pale grey-white square is held by a few black lines: two red rectangles stacked in the upper left corner, a thin yellow strip along the right edge and a blue bar at the bottom, with one large white plane at the centre. Mondrian painted it in Paris in 1927, at the height of his classic Neo-Plastic period, when colour was pushed to the edges and a single large white field became the main event. Each colour has its own weight and position, and the balance is asymmetrical rather than centred. The canvas is set in a plain white surround of the kind Mondrian preferred, which keeps the painting flat and continuous with the wall instead of enclosing it. It is in The Cleveland Museum of Art, acquired through the museum's Contemporary Collection fund.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
