A large red square dominates the upper left of a square canvas, set in a grid of black lines with a yellow rectangle at top right, a black block beneath the red, a blue bar at lower right and smaller planes of pale grey; along the edges, several lines stop short of the border. Mondrian painted it in Paris in 1921 and signed it with his monogram and the date. It is often described as his first painting after he set out the principles of Neo-Plasticism, an art reduced to straight lines, right angles, the three primary colours and the non-colours white, grey and black, which he believed could express a universal harmony. A Dutch acquaintance, Jo Steijling, bought it on a visit to his Paris studio in 1921, and the sale helped him move to a larger studio on the rue du Départ. It is in the Kunstmuseum Den Haag.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
