A large red-orange rectangle fills the upper right of a square canvas, set against planes of pale blue-grey, a dark navy band at the left edge, a black block at lower left and a pale yellow-green rectangle at the bottom, all divided by black lines. The colours are softer and greyer than the pure primaries of his later work. Mondrian painted it in Paris in 1921, the year he arrived at the grid of black lines and flat coloured planes that defines his mature style, and it shows that style still settling: the lines vary in weight, and blue-grey carries much of the surface. The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, which titles it Tableau, received it in 1998 with the Jacques and Natasha Gelman Collection.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
