A sunlit terrace above the Channel at Sainte-Adresse, the resort near Le Havre where Monet spent the summer of 1867 with his family. His father sits in the panama hat in the foreground, and other relatives served as models for the figures at the fence. Monet took an elevated viewpoint and stacked terrace, sea and sky as three bands of bright colour, flattening the scene in a way that reflects his admiration for Japanese woodblock prints; he himself called it the Chinese painting with flags. The breezy calm gives no hint that the twenty-six-year-old painter was broke and at odds with his family over his relationship with Camille Doncieux. He showed the picture twelve years later at the fourth Impressionist exhibition in 1879. The Metropolitan Museum of Art bought it in 1967 with funds given by friends of the museum.
