The towers of the Palace of Westminster silhouetted in blue against a sky of pink, peach and lavender, their shapes repeated in the rippling Thames below. Monet painted the Houses of Parliament during stays in London between 1899 and 1901, always from the same spot on the terrace of St Thomas' Hospital across the river and on canvases of nearly the same size, changing only the hour and the weather. What drew him was the city's fog, which turned stone into coloured haze; Turner and Whistler had loved the same effects. He finished many of the canvases back at Giverny, which is why this one is signed and dated 1903, and he was unbothered when critics objected to studio work. A single olive-green stroke on the water stands for a boatman. The painting belongs to the National Gallery of Art in Washington.
