La Grenouillère was a floating café and boat-hire on the Seine near Bougival, an easy train ride from Paris and a fashionable place to swim and be seen. In the summer of 1869 Monet and Renoir set up their easels there side by side; Renoir's almost identical view is in the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm. On 25 September Monet wrote that he dreamed of making a painting of the baths and had only produced some bad sketches, which is probably how he thought of this canvas: broad, quick strokes that build the water, the boats and the little round island in the middle with a directness he usually reserved for studies. That sketch-like handling is exactly what later generations prized. The painting came to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1929 with the H. O. Havemeyer bequest and is one of the founding images of Impressionism.
