Turner looks out from the steps of Santa Maria della Salute across the water, the palaces of Venice seeming to rest on their own reflections as the lagoon takes over the lower half of the picture. The view is not literally accurate; he began from a slight pencil drawing made on his first visit to Venice in 1819, but the painting grew out of his second stay in 1833. He showed it at the Royal Academy in 1835, where it was widely admired, and it draws on his long experience as a marine painter and the brilliance of his watercolour technique. Venice became the great subject of his last two decades. The canvas entered the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1899 with the bequest of Cornelius Vanderbilt and hangs in the European paintings galleries.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
