A night sky churns with spirals of blue and white above a sleeping village, a crescent moon and stars ringed with haloes, and a dark cypress rising like a flame on the left. Van Gogh painted it in June 1889 from memory and imagination in his room at the asylum of Saint-Paul-de-Mausole in Saint-Rémy, where he had admitted himself a month earlier. The view from his window gave him the hills; the village and church steeple are partly invented. The paint is thick and the strokes are long and rhythmic, so the sky reads as movement rather than depth. He thought little of the picture himself. It went to the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1941 and became the best-known image of his career.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.

Size. We'd hang this one at 24×18. Prints at 16×12, 24×18 in — 16×12 for a shelf, desk or a gallery-wall grid; 24×18 above a console or sideboard.
Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — natural wood flatters the lighter palette; black sharpens it.
Pairing. Pairs as a set of three with other famous painting prints (10% off three or more).
