One of the last self-portraits Van Gogh painted in Paris, made in the autumn of 1887 shortly before he left for Arles. He wears a grey felt hat and a blue coat, and the whole picture is built from short, directional strokes: the background radiates outward from the head in rings of blue and orange, the face and beard are hatched in complementary colours. It shows how completely he had absorbed Pointillism and then bent it to his own purpose, using the dashes to give the surface energy rather than optical calm. The canvas is in the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, which holds the family's collection, and it is one of the most reproduced images of the artist.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
The radiating blue and orange strokes have real energy up close, so keep it at 16×24 where people pass slowly: a hallway, stairwell or office. A slim black frame on an off-white wall lets the hatching carry the room's colour.

Size. We'd hang this one at 16×24. Prints at 12×18, 16×24, 24×36 in — 12×18 for a shelf, desk or a gallery-wall grid; 16×24 above a desk, console or in a hallway; 24×36 as the statement piece above a sofa or bed.
Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — natural wood flatters the lighter palette; black sharpens it.
Pairing. Pairs as a set of three with other famous painting prints (10% off three or more).
