Fifteen sunflowers in an earthenware vase, some fresh, some gone to seed, painted almost entirely in shades of yellow against a yellow wall. Van Gogh made this canvas in Arles in August 1888 as one of a group of sunflower pictures intended to decorate the room where Paul Gauguin would stay that autumn. He worked fast, before the cut flowers wilted, and used the new chrome yellows to push the colour as far as it would go; a thin blue line marks the table edge. The vase carries his signature, Vincent. This version, with the yellow background, was kept by the artist's family and bought by the National Gallery in London in 1924. Van Gogh painted a repetition of it in January 1889, now in Amsterdam.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
Yellow on yellow warms any room that gets little sun: a kitchen, breakfast nook or north-facing living room. It holds its own at 24×36 in natural wood on a white or soft grey wall, and pairs with Irises for a two-colour run.
