Narcissus lies at the edge of a woodland pool, lost in his own reflection, while the nymph Echo, in a rose-coloured robe slipping from one shoulder, sits on the opposite bank among wild irises and watches him, unable to speak first and unable to be heard. Waterhouse painted the story from Ovid in 1903, late in his career, and it was bought by the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool the same year. Narcissus flowers already grow at his side, foretelling his end, and the cool greens, grey rocks and still water make it one of the most serene of his pictures; the long canvas sets the two figures at either end with the pool between them, so that the distance that separates them is the subject.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
