About Cecilia Beaux

Cecilia Beaux was born in Philadelphia in May 1855 and raised by her grandmother and aunts after her mother's death; she studied lithography, china painting and then drawing at the Pennsylvania Academy. Les Derniers Jours d'Enfance, her sister and nephew painted in 1883–85, was accepted at the Paris Salon of 1887 and took her to France for two years. On her return she became the most sought-after portrait painter in America after Sargent, painting her family, Philadelphia society and later Theodore Roosevelt's wife and daughter and, after the First World War, Clemenceau and Cardinal Mercier, with a long, fluent brush and a love of white dresses and black cats. In 1895 she became the first woman to teach full time at the Pennsylvania Academy. A broken hip in 1924 ended her painting, and she died at Gloucester, Massachusetts, in September 1942. Her portraits print as elegant, light-filled pictures for a bedroom or sitting room.
