Beaux's sister Aimée Ernesta Drinker sits in a dark dress holding her young son, Henry, in a white suit on her lap, beside a small table with a vase of blossoms, on a patterned rug in a brown interior. The title means the last days of childhood. The painting won the Mary Smith Prize at the Pennsylvania Academy in 1885 and was praised at the Paris Salon in 1887, launching Beaux's career as a portraitist. It was given to the Academy by the sitters' family in 1989.

This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.

Where it works

A warm brown and black mother-and-child portrait for a living room, bedroom or hallway in a dark wood frame. It suits cream, terracotta or warm grey walls at 12×18 and pairs with Beaux's Man with the Cat.

Size. We'd hang this one at 12×18. Prints at 12×18 in — 12×18 for a shelf, desk or a gallery-wall grid.

Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — black suits the deep tones of this period; dark wood warms it.

Pairing. Pairs as a set of three with other famous painting prints (10% off three or more).
