About Paul Berthon
Paul Berthon was born at Villefranche-sur-Saône in March 1872, studied painting in Lyon and came to Paris, where he was a pupil of Eugène Grasset at the École Guérin and took from him the heavy outline, the flat colour and the flowers drawn from pattern books. His Salon des Cent poster of 1895, a fair-haired girl among lilies and orchids, made his name; the Liane de Pougy for the Folies-Bergère of 1898, in the tall narrow format Mucha had made fashionable, and the posters for the review L'Ermitage and for the Leçons de violon followed. Most of his work, though, was not advertising at all but decorative panels, colour lithographs of women among snowballs, irises and ivy, sold to be framed, which he published through the 1890s and showed at the Salon. He also designed ceramics and furniture. He died in Paris in February 1934.
