A young woman with fair hair and a jewelled band across her brow stands among white lilies and orchids against a blue ground, holding a flower, under the lettering Salon des 100, 17e exposition, 31 rue Bonaparte. Berthon designed the poster in 1895 for the group show at the gallery of the magazine La Plume, and it is the purest of his flower-and-maiden designs, the lilies and the hair drawn in the same soft outline; he had studied under Grasset and shared his debt to stained glass. Printed by Chaix, Paris. The impression reproduced is in the Bibliothèque nationale de France.
This full-bleed edition prints the work edge to edge from a high-resolution scan of the original, very slightly cropped (a few percent at most) to fit the sheet. The gallery edition shows the whole work, uncropped. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
Lilies and a fair-haired figure on soft blue, for a bedroom, bathroom or hallway at 18×24 or 24×32 in thin black or dark wood, no mat. It suits a white or pale blue wall and pairs with Grasset's Salon des Cent.
